How many students attend Lyman Moore Middle School in a typical year?
How many students are in an advisory class and what issues do they discuss?
There are 10 to 12 students in each Advisory. They will be using the SEL curriculum “Character Strong” which is the secondary version of “Purposeful People,” which our elementary schools used last year. They will also do team-building games and collaborative group activities!
Why don’t Moore students use lockers? Where can students store their boots/jackets all day?
All Portland Public School students do not use lockers. It is a safety issue. Students may leave their boots and jackets in their Advisory classrooms.
What is the difference between a school counselor and social worker?
School social workers reduce barriers to student learning by providing mental health support and connecting families with community partners and resources. School counselors help students navigate social challenges and focus more on academic needs involving scheduling, course placement, and communicating with house teams.
Can any student access food and clothing through Lyman Moore's Care Closet? How can parents help contribute to the supplies?
Yes, any student can access the food and clothing. The Care Closet is organized by the dedicated social workers at Lyman Moore in an effort to keep our kids and families supplied with food and other essentials they need. Right now, the following items are low in stock and need replenishing: jasmine rice, pasta, sauce in plastic jars, vegetable oil, flour, sugar, ramen noodles, palm oil, masa flour, frozen cassava leaves, mac n cheese, oatmeal, and granola bars.
If you're able to help restock these items, that would be greatly appreciated! Simply bring a bag of requested items to the office during school hours and say, "This is for the Care Closet.”
When do sign-ups start for school clubs?
Clubs start in October each year. We share more information at the end of September.
If there is a cost to extra curricular clubs/activities, can parents ask for a fee waiver?
There are no costs, except for the Ski Club. Ski Club information including the possibility of fee waivers is shared in November.
What type of treatment does the school nurse offer? Can you give out over-the-counter (OTC) prescriptions when needed?
The school nurse can give out OTC drugs, but parents have to sign a permission form. If you have specific questions, please call and speak directly with Kristin Brady or Mary Jo Brink, our school nurses: (207) 874-8152.
What sports are offered each year? Is it true some sports are not available for sixth graders?
We offer many school-based activities and encourage all students to participate in at least one school activity. Unless otherwise noted, activities are open to all students in all grade levels. Please view the co-curricular website for details.
Can students hang out on the school property after school is over?
No, the fields and courts are reserved for the sports teams until 4:15 p.m. Students are welcome to use the courts and fields after that time.
